NJ Transit App Redesign

The intended goal of this Web Design project was to find an app that we found simply did not work, and redesign it to make it more user-friendly, modern, and intuitive.

The NJ Transit app is intended to be an easier solution to train, bus, and light rail travel for the travelers or residents of New Jersey. The current app suffers from an outdated UI, which uses pixelated icons and images, and presents too much information to users while also displaying unimportant details foremost. The app does not feel user-friendly, making standard tasks prolonged, such as simply buying a ticket, and needs an overall makeover.

As a user of the app myself, I took into account the struggles that I had with the app and the things that I thought could be done better. I studied the designs and layouts of other travel apps that I thought worked well. Apps like Amtrak, SEPTA, United, and more were used to help create the redesign. These updated apps contain elements such as standard app recurring padding numbers, data-based elements like specific button shapes and sizes that users find easier to use, and a color system that keeps the user engaged in the app.

In my redesign, I incorporated the following elements: a welcome message, a scroll that includes nearby train stations, a current ticket if purchased and upcoming, a map of the user's location, Buttons that are sized down and present the most important information first, an advertisement slider, a version for Dark Mode to meet Apple's HIG Requirements, and a preloader screen that is much simpler and forwards the brand and its message.
